Haemodialysis Solutions are solutions of electrolyte in concentration similar to those of normal extracellular body fluid. Glucose may be included in the formulation. Haemodialysis Solutions are intended for use in a the haemodialyser for blood purification by extracorporeal circulation of variable duration. The patient's blood is circulated over a membrane of suitable permeability which is in contact with the haemodialysis solution. Because of the large volumes used, Haemodialysis Solutions are usually prepared by diluting a concentrated solution with water of suitable quality, using for example an automatic dosing device. (Advice on the water to be used for diluting Concentrated Haemodialysis Solutions is provided in the Annex to this monograph). Concentrated Haemodialysis Solutions are prepared using suitable materials and under conditions designed to produce solutions having as low a degree of microbial contamination. They are stored so as to maintain this minimum degree of contamination. In certain circumstances, for clinical reasons, it may be necessary to use sterile, apyrogenic solutions. During dilution and use, precautions are taken to avoid microbial contamination. Diluted solutions are to be used immediately after preparation. Concentrated Haemo- dialysis Solutions are supplied in airtight tamper-evident containers of plastic
